I have seen cover ups in the store, but they are often that elastic top that stretches out in just a few wearings, especially with a few wet bathing suit tops. We are a little conservative and like the girls to put a cover on when they are running around the back yard. So I am always on the lookout for coverups that are nice, but you know, I’m a little on the cheap side. When I saw that I could make my own tops out of clearance t-shirt for just a couple of dollars, I knew I had to try it. There is a teeny touch of sewing, but seriously, it’s just tacking in a couple stitches. It goes very fast. Fashion your own swimsuit cover up!
First, lay out your t-shirt on a flat surface, and get a sharp pair of scissors.
Your first cut is going to be around the neck. Cutting just a little outside the collar, and try to keep your cut from being jagged. Jagged cuts happen when you use a chopping motion, instead of a smooth cutting motion.
Next, trim off the arm. I don’t mark it, but you could use a washable marker to help guide you. I cut about 2 inches from the seam.
Take the arm you just cut off, flip it over and lay it on the other arm. Use that as a guide to cut that side.
You can now cut off the bottom edge. I use this to wrap the back, so once it’s off, cut a line so that it’s a single strip.
Now gather the t-shirt at the back, taking the open arms and squish them together.
Begin by wrapping the hem from the bottom around the top, making sure both sides are even, then wrap both sides around until you are out of the fabric strand.
At the end, you will have two ends, take a little matching thread, and stitch those ends together. Make sure the seam is at the inside part of the back.
Done! You can adjust the cuts to have thicker or thinner straps and bigger or smaller cuts at the underarms for the arm holes.
Now you have a simple and cute cover up for your minions or self to wear after the pool.
Enjoy!
